How to Stiffen the Brim of Your Hats

I have instructions in all of my patterns – where applicable – for shaping your hat or accessory. What I have found with the Patchwork Walking Hat, The Little Red Walking Hat and the Carrie Walking Hat is that even after shaping, the brim can lose its stiffness.

There are different ways of doing this, but I used the simplest method and found it quite effective:

Buy a can of starch. Spray generously and evenly around the brim. Set on a bowl of comparable height and circumference (I use a Tupperware bowl that stands at approximately 4 1/2″ tall and is approximately 22″ around). Allow to dry.

I have been wearing my Patchwork Walking Hat for days since starching the brim and it’s holding up great! Another great way to preserve the hat’s shape is to set it back on the bowl when you’re not wearing it!
